What are 1:1 consulting sessions?
1:1 consulting sessions are 15, 30, 60, or 90 minute sessions that take place virtually (usually via Zoom).  Depending on your needs, these sessions can be used to talk through ideas, concerns, and/or issues related to your writing process or academic situation.  They can also be used to follow up on specific writing feedback and as a space to safely and comfortably get advice.

What does editing consist of?
Editing can involve a combination of technical, content, and developmental editing or exclusively one or the other, depending on your needs.
  • Technical Editing includes items such as: correcting technical errors such as spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage.  It can also include correcting APA citations.
  • Content Editing includes items such as: eliminating wordiness, triteness, and inappropriate jargon; smoothing transitions and moving sentences to improve readability; suggesting and sometimes implementing additions and deletions; and enforcing consistent style and tone.
  • Developmental Editing is a form of writing support that comes into play before, during, or after the production of a publishable manuscript including but not limited to talking through a writing project(s).

Do you do document formatting per my university’s requirements?
I do not offer formatting services, however, I am happy to refer you to colleagues of mine that do offer formatting services.

How many hours will I need?

The typical time ranges for common activities are detailed below:
You have done all the heavy lifting yourself.  Now you need a second set of eyes to make sure it is polished.
Editing a journal article or book chapter
You have a draft of your journal article that is between 80% to 100% complete, and you need another set of eyes to review it both for content and technical edits.
Typical Time Requirement: 2-3 hours
Editing a dissertation
You have a draft of your dissertation that is between 80% and 100% complete, and you need a final thorough edit and proofread before you submit the final version.
Typical Time Requirement: 5-10 hours
Editing a book
You have a final draft of your book manuscript and you need a second set of eyes to polish it technically and to ensure that you haven’t missed any major issues.
Typical Time Requirement: 20 hours or more
Editing other documents (such as tenure dossiers, grants, reports, etc.)
You have a draft of your document that is between 80% and 100% complete, and you need a final thorough edit and proofread before you submit the final version.  Depending on the length and needs of the writing piece, times can vary tremendously.  After we have an initial conversation, I can provide you with a quote.
Typical Time Requirement: Varies

You are working on your writing and you need more than basic editing help. You need a dedicated
thought partner, compassionate listener, thorough editor, and maybe even a cheerleader.
Developmental Editing – One and DonE
You need multiple levels of support on one writing project and want a developmental editing partner to help you for a limited time.
Typical Time Requirement: 5 hours or more
Developmental Editing – Short Term
You need multiple levels of support on one or several writing projects and want a short-term developmental editing partner to help you over a sustained time period.
Typical Time Requirement: 10 hours or more
Developmental Editing – Long Term
You need multiple levels of support on one or several writing projects and want a long-term developmental editing partner to help you indefinitely.
Typical Time Requirement: 20 hours or more
*Note that these time ranges are estimates and may vary, depending on your specific needs and the size of your project.  Additionally, you can always purchase more hours should your needs change.

How will I keep track of my hour usage?
Once you’re a client, you’ll have access to the HoneyBook Client Portal, which details all our communications, files, and hour usage and balances.  You don’t need to do anything on your end. Please note that all non-administrative interaction (including live sessions, editing, email correspondence, etc.) contributes towards hour usage.

What payment options do you offer?
Most transactions are conducted via PayPal.  However, if you prefer Venmo, ApplePay, Zelle, or CashApp, these are also acceptable.

What about other services?
Occasionally, I take on special projects.  Feel free to reach out if there is something you have in mind that doesn’t fall into the 1:1 consulting sessions or editing categories.
