The emphasis on our own scholarly selves was important, without the pressure (or insistence) to justify it as a means to being a better educator. While that may happen as a byproduct anyways, I felt this space intensely valued a side of ourselves as scholars separate from the ways these focuses of study are often overwhelmed (or co-opted) by institutional missions relating to DEI.

The environment was highly supportive. This is the secret sauce for writing. The community I hope will continue.

Such an amazing experience! It was really powerful to get to know my colleagues research and approaches, to hear their voices, and to have a supportive and affirmative environment to encourage dialogue!

I really valued this time immensely. In some ways, while the progress I made on my own project was significant, connecting with my faculty peers through their research was something I have rarely had a chance to do, and am truly grateful for that opportunity.

I got some needed clarity about how to contain the various “tentacles” of my project, and I think I got closer to a coherent thru-line in the project. Of course, I need to now realize that clarity in ongoing work, but I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to do so. The retreat really did feel like one of the best things that I’ve ever participated in on campus. I feel so optimistic about the future and our capacity to nurture and support new research across disciplines. THANK YOU!!

Life changing! After only 25 minutes, I had a new direction and ideas that I had never considered. And it seemed so simple! I just talked, and Aurora would ask a pointed question, and away we went! What a facilitation gift that is! And my experience is not unlike many of the colleagues I talked to in the workshop! Yes, indeed!

This was such a luxury, to have dedicated time to write without competing and immediate teaching responsibilities.  I definitely think this was a wonderful way to start my semester because to go from 1,000,000 miles an hour to 20 miles an hour can be jarring. This retreat provided some structure around my work but didn't feel like an imposition.

This experience has felt like a hug. The retreat did not re/produce the capitalist impulse to produce for the sake of producing. Hearing about everyone's writing process helped me to realize that so much of our writing is more than putting pen to paper. It's about the headspace, the brainstorming, the outlining, the hemming, the hawing, and eventually, the writing.

The presence of an outsider changes the group dynamics in a positive way. Perhaps it is a little like having a house guest. I am not sure. At any rate, Dr. Chang was a master facilitator for what were doing and my consultations with her were extremely fruitful.
